Classic Lamp of Knowledge Nursing Pin
The design
On the pin
A round pin about the size of a quarter. A navy ring carries SCHOOL OF NURSING across the top and CLASS OF 2027 along the bottom in raised gold-tone capitals. Inside, a white field holds a gold-tone oil lamp with an orange flame, the only warm color on the pin, so the eye lands on it first.
What it means
The lamp points to Florence Nightingale, the "Lady with the Lamp", who checked on wounded soldiers at night in the military hospital at Scutari during the Crimean War. She actually carried a folding Turkish lantern; nursing schools adopted the classical oil lamp instead, an older symbol of learning. On a pin it stands for what the graduate has earned: knowledge, and the duty to keep caring.
Colors and finish
Navy and white keep the pin formal enough for a uniform and a cap-and-gown photo. Hard enamel is polished flush with the metal, so the white center stays clean and the small lettering reads clearly at 1 inch. Gold tone matches most school seals; silver tone suits schools whose colors are blue and silver.

Pinning ceremonies usually fall in May and December, a few days before commencement. Standard delivery takes up to 30 business days after you approve the proof, so approve by late March for a May ceremony and by late October for a December one.
