A cut-out is an area removed from inside the pin so the fabric behind it shows through: the hole in a donut, the center of the letter O, the space between a mascot's arm and body.

Why add cut-outs
Cut-outs make a pin look lighter and more intentional, especially for designs with rings, frames or lettering. On trading pins, a cut-out window around the logo makes the shape stand out on a towel.
How they are made
On cast zinc alloy pins, the open areas are part of the mold. On struck pins, a second cutting die punches them out. Either way, the edge of a cut-out is plated just like the outside edge.
Price
Cut-outs add $0.20 per pin, regardless of how many openings the design has. Base prices start at $3.20 per pin for 100 soft enamel pins at 1 inch. See all options on the pricing page.
Size limits
- Openings should be at least 1.5 mm across, smaller holes may close up during plating.
- Leave at least 1 mm of metal around each opening.
- Very thin bridges between openings can bend; our artist will thicken them on the proof.

Do cut-outs make a pin weaker?
Not if the metal around each opening is at least 1 mm wide. Our artist checks every bridge on the proof.
Can soft enamel pins have cut-outs?
Yes. Cut-outs work on soft enamel, hard enamel and die struck pins.
Can a cut-out be filled with translucent enamel?
No. A cut-out is open; for a see-through look, use translucent enamel over metal instead.
Is there an extra mold fee for cut-outs?
No. The cut-out add-on price covers the extra cutting die.
