A day-by-day plan
Monday: Kick-off. Decorate the staff room and front doors. Hand every staff member a welcome gift: a custom pin with a "Thank you" note from the PTA, or a small treat.
Tuesday: National Teacher Day. Students bring a handwritten note or drawing for their teacher. Classes can make a group card or a video message.
Wednesday: Treat day. A coffee bar, breakfast or a snack cart in the staff room. Parent volunteers can cover recess duty so teachers get a real break.
Thursday: Supply day. Families donate classroom supplies from teachers' wish lists, or the PTA buys gift cards for classroom supplies.
Friday: Celebration. A catered lunch, a raffle of donated gifts, or an early dismissal for staff where policy allows.
Ideas that cost little or nothing
- Notes from students, collected in a jar for each teacher
- A "why I love my teacher" bulletin board
- Covering lunch or recess duty
- A playlist of students' favorite songs for the staff room
- Photos of each class holding thank-you signs
Gifts from the PTA to all staff
- A custom pin with the school mascot and "Thank you": teachers wear them on lanyards all year. See teacher appreciation pins.
- Water bottles or coffee mugs with the school logo
- Plants for classrooms
- A staff T-shirt for spirit days
- A chair massage station for an afternoon
At 200 pieces, a 1-inch soft enamel pin is $2.40 each, delivered, enough for all staff with spares for new hires.
Class gifts from families
Families can pool contributions for a class gift: a gift card, a personalized tote bag, a book for the classroom library with a note inside, or an experience such as a restaurant gift card. Pooling avoids a pile of mugs and lets every family contribute what they can.
Include every staff member
Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance to thank everyone who keeps a school running: aides, office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, bus drivers, nurses, counselors and librarians. Make sure the PTA's gift list covers them all.
Planning timeline
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Early March | Form a small committee; set a budget |
| Mid-March | Choose gifts; order pins and printed items (approve proofs by late March) |
| Early April | Ask families for notes and supply donations |
| Late April | Confirm food, volunteers and the daily schedule |
| May 3 to 7 | Run the week; photograph it for next year |
For principals and districts
District-wide appreciation can use one design across every school with each school's name, ordered together for a lower unit price. See school pins and employee recognition pins.
Ideas by budget
| Budget per staff member | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Free | Student notes, a recognition board, covering duties, a thank-you video |
| Under $3 | A custom pin with a thank-you note, a treat, a flower |
| $3 to $10 | Pin plus a coffee card, a plant, quality pens, a school-logo tumbler |
| $10 to $25 | A catered lunch, a personalized tote, a classroom supply gift card |
Ideas students can do, by age
Preschool and kindergarten: handprint cards, a class drawing, a song performed in the classroom.
Elementary: "All about my teacher" fill-in sheets, a class book of thank-you pages, a decorated door.
Middle school: written letters about a lesson that mattered, a class playlist, a surprise breakfast organized by students.
High school: letters from graduating seniors to teachers who shaped them, a video montage, nominations for a school award.
Don't forget specialists and support staff
Music, art and PE teachers, special education teachers and aides, librarians, counselors, nurses, office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff and bus drivers all shape students' days. A school-wide gift that reaches everyone, such as a pin with a note from the PTA, avoids anyone feeling left out.
Ideas for remote or hybrid classes
Mail a card and a small gift to each teacher's school, organize a surprise video call with students holding signs, or send a digital thank-you board with messages from families. A pin travels well in an envelope with a note.
Making it a tradition
Schools that order a new appreciation pin design each year find that teachers start collecting them on their lanyards. Keep the same shape and change the color and year, and the collection becomes part of the school's culture. See teacher appreciation pins for ready-made designs.
