Translucent and stained glass enamel pins

Translucent enamel is tinted but see-through, so the texture and shine of the metal underneath glow through the color. It gives pins a stained glass or gemstone look.

How it is made

The metal under the translucent area is usually given a texture first, such as a sunburst, waves or a brushed pattern, so light bounces back through the enamel. The translucent color is filled on top and baked. On some designs we leave the metal smooth and polished for a jewel effect.

Where it works best

  • Stained glass windows, lanterns and lamps, such as the lamp on nursing pins
  • Water, sky, flames and gemstones
  • Designs by artists and creators who want a premium retail look
  • Award pins where a single colored area should catch the eye

Design tips

  • Use translucent color in large areas; small areas do not show the effect.
  • A gold-tone finish under translucent enamel looks warm; silver looks cool and bright.
  • Combine with opaque colors for contrast.

Price

Translucent enamel adds $0.30 per color per pin. A 1.25-inch hard enamel pin at 200 pieces costs $2.97 plus the add-on. See the pricing page for every size.

Ask for translucent areas on the quote form and our artist will show the texture and color on your proof. To compare with other effects, see glitter and UV printed gradients.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

All questions
Is translucent enamel the same as stained glass pins?

Yes. Stained glass pins use translucent enamel over textured or polished metal so light shines through the color.

Can translucent enamel be used on soft enamel pins?

Yes, though it looks richest on hard enamel where the surface is polished.

What colors work best as translucent?

Deep blues, greens, reds and purples. Very pale colors show little effect.

Can the texture under the enamel be custom?

Yes. Sunburst, waves, brushed lines and guilloche patterns are common, and custom textures can be engraved into the mold.
