The basics
- Wear lapel pins on the left lapel, over the heart. See lapel pin placement.
- On formal jackets, wear one pin, or two at most.
- Keep the pin clean and straight.
- Match the metal of the pin to other metals you wear (watch, cufflinks, belt buckle) when you can.
At work
Company pins are worn every day in many industries. A small logo pin is appropriate with business attire. Service and award pins are usually worn on special occasions or according to company policy. Pins expressing personal views are best left to casual settings unless your workplace encourages them.
At job interviews
A small, neutral pin is fine. Avoid pins that reveal political or controversial views unless they relate to the role. A professional association pin can be a good conversation starter.
At weddings
The wedding party may wear matching pins instead of or alongside boutonnieres. Guests can wear a small pin but should not compete with the couple's chosen details. See wedding pins.
At funerals and memorials
A memorial pin or a black ribbon pin is appropriate. Keep colorful novelty pins for another day. See memorial pins.
Flag pins
Wear the flag pin on the left lapel, upright. When wearing two pins, the flag pin takes the more prominent position. See American flag pins.
Uniforms
Uniform rules override general etiquette. Follow your organization's guidance on which pins are authorized and where they go.
Casual wear
On denim, bags and hats, the rules relax: wear as many pins as you like. The only etiquette is practical: use locking backs so you do not lose them.
Ordering pins for your organization
If you are creating pins that people will wear at work, keep them small (0.75 to 1 inch) and understated. See corporate lapel pins and what is a lapel pin.
