What it looks like
At multi-day tournaments, trading happens everywhere: before opening ceremonies, between games, in the evenings, at designated trading areas. Players walk around with towels, bags and hats full of pins, and trading is often the main social activity off the field.
Before you go
- Order pins in time: approve your proof 6–8 weeks before travel. See what are trading pins.
- Order enough: see how many trading pins do you need.
- Divide pins into daily bags for each player.
- Pack displays: towels, pin bags or hats; see trading pin display.
- Talk about manners: share pin trading etiquette.
During the tournament
- Let players trade freely during set times; keep games and team activities pin-free.
- Help younger kids keep track of their pins.
- Keep a team reserve with the manager for the last days.
- Encourage players to trade with as many teams as possible, not just ask for the flashiest pins.
Safety
Pins have sharp posts. Keep backs on pins in bags, and remind young players not to carry loose pins in pockets.
After the tournament
Help players display their collection at home and save a set of the team's own pins for the coach, sponsors and the team's memory board. Planning next season? Leftover pins trade just as well next year; see tournament trading pins.
A typical tournament day
Mornings are usually for games. Trading picks up in the afternoon between games and in the evening at the team's lodging or the tournament's trading area. On opening day, trading before and after the opening ceremony is often the busiest of the week, so make sure players have their first day's allowance ready.
