The design
On the pin
The pin is cut in the shape of the ribbon itself, about an inch tall: a red loop with crossed tails, edged in silver tone, with the open center of the loop filled in white. A navy banner across the tails reads END AIDS in white capitals.
What it means
This is the original awareness ribbon. In 1991 the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in New York chose a red loop as a sign of compassion for people living with HIV and their caregivers, and it reached millions of viewers when it was worn on stage at that year's Tony Awards. Almost every awareness ribbon since copies its shape.
Colors and finish
Red stands for passion, love and blood, which is why the artists picked it. Soft enamel leaves the silver outline slightly raised around the red, so the loop shape reads clearly even at three quarters of an inch. The navy banner keeps the message legible against red without adding a third bright color.

When to order
World AIDS Day, December 1, has been observed every year since 1988, and many groups also mark National HIV Testing Day on June 27. For a December event, approve the proof by mid-October; rush production in 10 business days covers later decisions.
Who orders it

Isn't red also the color for heart disease and stroke?
Yes, several causes share red. The wording on the banner is what tells people which cause you mean, so we keep it short and large enough to read at arm's length.
